HOODOOS

This week, I’m ruminating about shapely rocks.

Hoodoo. What a wonderful word and thing. There’s a magical place in the state of Utah called Goblin Valley State Park. Hoodoos are the fantastical rock formations found there and wherever in the world sandstone or soft volcanic rock is eroded by water, wind and temperature. The irregular shapes of hoodoos is due to the varying softness of the rock layers that are exposed to the elements. The color of hoodoos depends on the types of minerals that are found within the rock.

From a distance, hoodoos look like people in all their weird and wonderful shapes, sizes, and colors. All hoodoos are connected to the ground beneath, just as people are all connected in our underlying formation known as homo sapiens sapiens. And with that clumsy metaphor, let’s remember that each of us is a unique hoodoo anchored by our common humanity. Let the hilarity ensue.
